About us:
Stegra, formerly know as H2 Green Steel, is on a mission to disrupt the global steel industry by producing green steel, with the end goal of bringing down CO2 emissions to zero. By using green hydrogen and fossil-free electricity instead of coal; water and heat will be our primary emissions. By 2030, our ambition is to produce 5 million tonnes of green steel annually in our fully integrated, digitalized, and sustainable plant in Boden, located in northern Sweden - currently in construction phase. But this is just the beginning – our expertise in green hydrogen will enable us to decarbonize other industries in addition to steel, and we look forward to what’s next in store for us.

Project Background
Stegra’s Growth team has already created a digital model designed to iterate different scopes while optimizing Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH) and maximize green electricity usage. While this model currently serves the economic feasibility phase, a more sophisticated technical model is needed to assess grid independence and integration of new technologies for the next stages of project evaluation.
Objective
This Master’s thesis project aims to develop standalone Python models to further technical insights in plant operation, specifically focusing on enhancing grid independence through energy recovery and alternative heating solutions. The model should be interoperable with the existing Growth team model, enhancing its technical robustness.
As part of this thesis project, you will:
Develop Python Models:
- Heat recovery from waste streams for steam production.
- Heat recovery for internal heating applications.
- Model a biomethane-fueled heater for internal heating purposes.
Scenario Comparisons:
- Analyze the use of air vs. oxygen for burner systems, leveraging available oxygen as a byproduct of hydrogen production.
Model Integration:
- Ensure interoperability with the Growth team’s Python model to refine technical optimizations.
Potential Applications:
- Support internal project phases, including concept, pre-feasibility, and feasibility.
- Provide valuable insights for stakeholders.
- Establish a foundation for future research initiatives.
Candidate Profile:
We are looking for a Master’s student with:
- Strong programming skills in Python.
- Background in energy systems engineering, process engineering, or related fields.
- Interest in green hydrogen technology and decarbonization efforts.
- Analytical skills and attention to detail, with an ability to compare technical scenarios effectively.
