A bit about the role

As a Shop Mechanic in our DRI-plant you will be responsible for performing preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical systems and equipment critical to the production process. The role includes troubleshooting, repairing, and optimizing mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems to ensure continuous and efficient operations. You will play a key role in keeping all plant equipment running smoothly and reliably to support uninterrupted operations.
What you’ll do:
- Perform routine preventive and corrective maintenance of shop equipment, ensuring minimal downtime and consulting with managers for complex troubleshooting.
- Routinely install, maintain, and repair mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment to ensure consistent and reliable operation of production systems.
- Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electromechanical components to ensure smooth production operations.
- Ensure compliance with Lock Out, Tag Out (LOTO) procedures during maintenance activities to maintain a safe work environment.
- Routinely inspect mechanical components for signs of wear, vibrations, or inadequate lubrication and take necessary corrective actions to maintain equipment efficiency and prevent breakdowns.
What you’ll bring:
- Experience from heavy industry is an advantage, especially within preventive or planned maintenance of plant equipment such as in gas-based MIDREX facilities.
- A high school diploma or equivalent education in a relevant field, with a good understanding of maintenance principles.
- It’s a plus if you have documented mechanical experience and knowledge of workplace safety practices (for example, OSHA or similar).
- Welding skills or certificates are beneficial but not required.
- You feel comfortable working in industrial environments that can be warm, noisy, or at heights and in confined spaces when needed, as well as in rotating shifts.
- Experience with overhauling pumps, gearboxes, and conveyors is a strong advantage.
- Familiarity with mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems – and an interest in troubleshooting and maintaining such equipment – will be helpful in this role.
- Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is required; Swedish language skills are an advantage.

About Stegra
Stegra is on a mission to change the global steel industry by producing green hydrogen, iron, and steel - with the goal of eliminating CO₂ emissions. Instead of coal, we use green hydrogen and fossil-free electricity, meaning our primary emissions will be water and heat.
By 2030, our ambition is to produce 5 million tonnes of green steel annually in our fully integrated, digitized, and sustainable plant in Boden, Northern Sweden - currently under construction.
